Scratch is a great intro! We have been using Alice, but the success of the students is heavily dependent on the skill of the teacher. It is easier for student to be successful with Scratch with or without a knowledgeable teacher.
Our gifted students also learn how to program VEX robots with RobotC using the CMU curriculum.

I've used Alice on the MS level. I have also used some html web page creation. Students have enjoyed both.
